What an accreditation handbook is for, before the form is filled

An application without a standard is a brochure. A handbook is the standard: what evidence is expected, how governance is read, and what a listing does and does not mean. Sending a partner to a homepage answers none of those questions. Sending them to the handbook answers the one they asked.

A committee reading a private college will look for a named legal entity and a person who can sign for it. It will look for a description of programmes that does not pretend to be a national degree. It will look for rules on assessment, moderation and appeals, and for a note of how records, fees and personal data are kept. A quality-review log, even a short one, shows that the rules have been used. A logo on a slide does not.

The handbook is also the page a journalist or a partner should be given when the question is scope. Institutional review is not programme review. A listing of the college is not a listing of every certificate it prints. Renewal is a further look at the file, not an automatic extension. Those distinctions are what stop a true sentence becoming a false one on a brochure.

Writers covering an approval should quote the handbook rather than invent a power the listing does not have. A sentence that says the institution has met a published standard can be checked. A sentence that says the institution may now award national degrees cannot. The second sentence is the one that damages both the provider and the reviewer.

The account of the standard is the accreditation handbook. Read it before the form is filled. The decision that follows is an institutional quality-assurance decision. It does not create a university, and it does not accredit a single programme unless that programme has been reviewed on its own.
