A university makes a professor by a letter of appointment. The route is a doctorate or an equivalent research record, publications a hiring panel will read, teaching, and often supervised research. A faculty board recommends. The letter, not a certificate from elsewhere, is what makes the person a professor in that university. No outside body can confer the salary, the chair or the right to examine for that institution.
The steps are slow, and they are local. A doctorate is examined. Papers go to journals the field already reads. Teaching is documented. Supervision is taken on only where the university has authorised it. Promotion from lecturer to reader or associate professor follows the scale of that employer. A full professor is usually appointed after an external review. Industry professionals sometimes enter by a practice route. The institution still makes the appointment.
Recognition can sit beside that appointment. It cannot replace it. The International Association for Quality Assurance in Pre-Tertiary and Higher Education, with Pebble Hills University, offers a Distinguished Professorship Award for educators, researchers and practitioners whose work has had a substantial effect on a field. University teachers with a strong record, researchers who have advanced a subject, and professionals who have influenced education are the people the page describes.
The nomination is judged on the file: a curriculum vitae, publications or supervised work, and a note of the contribution. Recipients are listed on the QAHE and PHU platforms. PHU is an international provider of online and offshore learning. The award is not an employment contract at PHU, and it is not a chair at any other university. It does not confer a doctorate, a habilitation, or authority to award qualifications.
