Reviewers examine whether teaching staff hold appropriate qualifications and engage in ongoing development. Evidence usually includes CVs, appointment records and a summary of recent professional development activity.
For each major programme the institution should be able to show that staff have relevant academic or professional backgrounds. Associate or part-time staff should be included. A simple matrix linking staff to the modules they teach is often sufficient.
Professional development can take many forms: workshops, conference participation, peer observation or formal study. The important point is that activity is recorded and that staff have opportunities to improve their practice.
Institutions that only list qualifications without showing how staff stay current present a weaker picture. Conversely, a short annual summary of development activity, linked to teaching responsibilities, demonstrates an active approach.
Clear records also help the institution itself. They support succession planning, identify training needs and provide a ready response when external reviewers ask about staff capability.
